I just a new dell computer and the store associate said store returns are accepted only 2 weeks after purchase and then its one year with manufacturer. My question is it worth it to register it because the the warranty says " limited hardware warranty does not cover:
* Software, including the operating system and software added to the Dell-branded hardware products through our factory-integration system, third-party software, or the reloading of software
* Non-Dell branded products and accessories
* Problems that result from:
External causes such as accident, abuse, misuse, or problems with electrical power
Servicing not authorized by Dell
Usage that is not in accordance with product instructions
Failure to follow the product instructions or failure to perform preventive maintenance
Problems caused by using accessories, parts, or components not supplied by Dell
* Products with missing or altered Service Tags or serial numbers
* Products for which Dell has not received payment
* Normal wear and tear
so that pretty much sums that if anything happens, you cant call them for anything, so is it worth registering my computer at all?
Yes, it’s worth registering your system. Without it, you won’t be able to get free repairs or replacements. In the past, I have had to replace simple things like a keyboard, a mouse, but also a hard drive and memory card on brand new systems. The above lists are just ways to minimize the company budget against something being sent out unnecessarily.
I worked for a big computer company, and we got quite a number of unneeded items sent out because the techs didn’t check for basic things like cables being plugged in, software issues, and the like. About 30% could have been fixed by phone or chat; that can translate into a several million dollars worth of hardware, shipping, and company time. That’s why you get bugged sometimes to do some redundant things that you already did, like check plugs and remove buggy software. Regardless, once the tech or whoever finds out your system isn’t working, they replace it for you. They won’t sit there and determine how many times you had a pot of coffee next to your keyboard, or how your 2 year old stuck a small toy in your drive. Heck, don’t even tell them. Don’t tell them any details! Just tell them it stopped working, they send you another one.
Finally, you don’t usually have to register right away. In many cases, depending on the company, you can wait a month or two, which gives you ample time to break in your system. Adjust the date of purchase from one month to several weeks ago, and if they somehow find out from a receipt, just tell them you had major problems bringing back the system over and over again. They will think you had so many problems to begin with, they’ll want to make you happy.
Good luck!
