In a basis of adiposity infringement of a metabolism when processes of formation of fat of nutrients prevail of processes of its disintegration lays. Adiposity (fatness) almost always causes frustration of activity of an organism: work of heart is at a loss, blood circulation is broken, there is a short wind, fast fatigue, stability to infections decreases. To get rid of excess weight, it is necessary to consult, first of all, with the doctor.

Obesity Drugs for Kids

Posted on May 9, 2008

A new class of weight loss pills that suppress appetite through receptors in the brain could affect on  visual perseption in children.

The appetite suppressing receptors are called cannabinoid receptors. They control the plasticity and also regulate signaling among neurons in the visual cortex.

The researchers looked at the drug rimonabant (Acomplia). Findings suggest obesity drugs that block the cannabinoid receptors severely disrupted the cortical plasticity in young mice, so researchers believe they may have the same effect on human children.

As a result, the scientists are urging caution in using these drugs on overweight children.

Sanofi-Aventis, the company that makes Acomplia, is awaiting FDA approval for its use in the United States. Other pharmaceutical companies have similar drugs in development.

Weight Loss Pills

Posted on April 14, 2008

If you have been exercising and eating a healthy diet but still cannot seem to meet your weight loss goals you might want to consider taking a weight loss or diet pill in addition to your regular routine to help you burn those extra calories each day that might be the big difference between burning fat or maintaining your current weight.

Some people have doubts as to whether weight loss pills work and whether they should try using one as an aid. Here are a few things you should ask yourself before determining whether or not they are right for you.

The first thing you need to ask yourself is whether you have really tried to lose weight by the standard methods of exercise and proper diet. If you are overweight, you can’t simply take a diet pill but continue to live the exact same lifestyle and expect to lose weight. You still need to make sure you are burning the same or more calories that you consume each day either by cutting out calories from your diet and meals or by exercising more to lose weight.

There are however, some pills that can help reduce the appetite and minimize over eating. The problem here is that if you cut back too much on calories, your body will burn less calories and if you stop taking the pills, you will begin over-eating again and put back on all the weight you initially lost as well as having a less aggressive metabolism. Optimal use of any diet pill is by following a proper diet with at least some exercise each day, although for some people, healthier eating and taking an additional diet pill is all they need to start losing those unwanted pounds.

By reducing your appetite just enough, some pills can help stop some people from over eating. This can be the difference between getting fatter or staying the same, which you can then slowly work on with some exercise or changes to your diet.

You can also research what ingredients are in the pills and see if there are any common foods or beverages that contain them and start adding them to your current diet.

Another thing you need to consider is cost. You might want to try a bottle first to see if you get any result but you really need to consider how much it will cost to use them for several months or even a year depending on how much weight you want to lose and whether you can afford to keep using them for a prolonged period of time. It is always advised that you consult with your doctor before undertaking the use of any diet pills as they might interfere with certain medications you may be taking at the same time.

Low Fat Cooking for Weight Loss

Posted on April 9, 2008

The secret to weight loss through low fat cooking isn’t to cut all of the foods you love from your diet. It’s learning to make the foods you love in healthier ways.

If you want to lose weight, you have to burn off more fat than you consume. So cutting the amount of fat you have in your diet is the first step. And one way to do this is to substitute some of the high fat ingredients you cook with, instead using fat free or low fat alternatives.

You Can Eat Meat

A low fat diet doesn’t mean you have to give up meat. What is important is the type of meat you choose.

Removing the skin from chicken also removes a lot of the fat. With beef or pork, choose thin cuts. And if there is any visible fat on a cut of meat, trim it off.

Even on a low fat diet, you can still eat bacon and sausage. Sausages made with chicken or turkey contains less fat than beef or pork sausages. And turkey bacon is better for you than bacon make from pork. And it tastes good, too.

Cooking Your Meat

How you cook your meat also makes a difference. Chicken that has been baked, broiled or grilled is going to be lower in fat than chicken that’s been deep fried. Coating chicken with spiced breadcrumbs and then frying them can make a tasty substitute for deep fried chicken.

If you need to sauté your meat for one of your recipes, do so in a skillet that you have lightly sprayed with nonstick cooking spray.

Butter and Oil

nstead of using butter or oil to cook your eggs in the morning, spray the skillet with nonstick cooking spray instead. If you must use cooking oil, choose olive oil or canola oil over something like regular vegetable oil.

There is no denying that butter adds flavor to your dishes. But you can add flavor in other ways. For example, with egg dishes, you can experiment with all kinds of herbs and spices to give them more flavor. And, when you cook rice in fat free chicken broth, you taste buds won’t even miss the butter, and it tastes delicious!

Milk and Cream

A lot of the dishes you make that call for milk will work just as well with fat free milk as they would with whole milk. Dishes that call for heavy cream, you can substitute fat free evaporated milk.

And you can still make those delicious cheese cakes. Just substitute reduced fat cheeses for the ones you usually use.

Weight loss through low fat cooking doesn’t mean completely giving up on the foods you love. In most cases, it just means replacing some of the ingredients with healthier alternatives.

Posted on April 1, 2008

Acomplia is an oral prescription medication which has created waves in the weight loss market ever since its launch in the UK. Subsequent to which it has been launched in various other countries such as France, Germany, Ireland, Austria, Argentina, Denmark, Holland and Sweden. Some of the prospective countries which can witness the launch of this weight loss medication include Italy, Spain, and Mexico.

Use of Acomplia may cause a few adverse effects as a consequence of bodily changes in response to this medication. Yet, regardless of the adverse effects it sources such as anxiety and feeling of depression, Acomplia is still preferred by obese and overweight individuals who desire to lose weight.

“Prescription medication attaches the pre-requisite to procure a medical advice, but Alli can ease you of the hassle to run around doctor’s clinics. This is one reason why dieters round the globe are eagerly awaiting its launch which is likely to be around the month of July”.

Alli diet pill is presently under its pre-launch test. Glaxo-SmithKline, the drug-maker intends to provide 3-month supply to about 400 dieters prior to its launch in the stores.

Adderall: Weight Loss Fix of the Stars?

Posted on March 26, 2008

From crash diets to killer workouts, it’s little secret that the weight loss regimens of the stars are not always healthy ones.

But a relative newcomer to the celebrity weight loss buzz — the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) drug Adderall — has a number of nutrition experts worried that those hoping to emulate their favorite celebrities could be putting their health at grave risk.

According to a report in the New York Daily News on Monday, a number of female celebrities have used prescription Adderall, even if they have not been diagnosed with ADHD. And reports also suggest that some of these starlets have resorted to crushing and snorting these pills as a way to deliver a quicker effect.

“Often, if we’re just beginning to hear of stories about inappropriate use of drugs, like Adderall, for weight loss, it means it’s already a significant problem,” says Jackie Newgent, a registered dietitian and New York City-based nutrition consultant.

Connie Diekman, president of the American Dietetic Association and director of university nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis, says that “few of my clients report using Adderall for weight loss, but I am very aware of the existence of this problem.

“While these identified risks are significant, the risk that is of biggest concern is the implication that, because celebrities do this, it must be safe,” Diekman adds. “Celebrities are viewed as role models — or at least idols — for many people, and … such potentially harmful behavior puts them and others [at] unknown risk.”

And as the number of legitimate prescriptions for the drug grows, some worry that the rates of its abuse could climb as well.

“I find the use of Adderall for weight loss particularly troubling,” says June Stevens, chair of the department of nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “So many of our youth take Adderall for attention deficit disorder. I fear it may lead to eating disorders and dependency on the drug as a weight loss aid.”

Weighing In on Obesity Drugs

Posted on March 21, 2008

Sometimes you don’t have to look very hard for an investment idea. Pardon the pun, but obesity is a pretty big problem in the U.S. You certainly don’t need to work at Weight Watchers or a gym to see that Americans are overweight.

While gyms and diets are certainly one way to fix the problem, they don’t seem to be doing a whole lot of good; Americans have become more overweight with each passing year. Ultimately, Americans might get out of this mess the same way we got fat in the first place — a lazy fix, in the form of a drug.

Unfilled market
You’d think that weight-loss drugs would create a multibillion-dollar market, but that hasn’t happened yet.

Part of the problem is that the drugs just don’t work terribly well. In clinical trials supporting Abbott Laboratories’ (NYSE: ABT) Meridia, for instance, obese patients lost just 10-15 pounds more than patients not taking the drug. While every little pound helps, drugs like Meridia don’t seem to be the magic bullet that people are looking for.

The other problem is that the current drugs have side effects that drive prospective patients away. For example, GlaxoSmithKline’s (NYSE: GSK) Alli can cause gas and other unpleasant bowel changes. And while you might think that’d provide extra incentive to people taking the drug to stay away from fatty foods, those consequences are more than some people are willing to take.

In the works
The FDA’s refusal to approve Sanofi-Aventis’ Acomplia for marketing in the U.S. broke the field wide open. The first company to gain approval could open up the market, although me-too drugs that work better or have better side-effect profiles could easily overcome the first mover’s initial advantage.

Merck’s (NYSE: MRK) Taranabant and Pfizer’s (NYSE: PFE) CP-945598 both work by blocking the cannabinoid receptors in the brain. While stimulating the receptors (sometimes by smoking marijuana) gives you the munchies, blocking them causes you to lose your desire to eat. But like Acomplia, which also blocks the same receptor, the drugs can cause side effects like depression and even suicidal thoughts. Investors will get a closer look at Merck’s phase 3 data later this month, but early indications suggest that the drug isn’t as promising as Merck had hoped.

Arena (Nasdaq: ARNA) is targeting a different receptor, but it too could potentially have issues with side effects. Its phase 3 drug candidate, Lorcaserin, targets the same receptor as American Home Products’ (now Wyeth (NYSE: WYE)) fen-phen. One-year safety data from its two-year trial is due out this month, which should give insight into whether the drug causes the same heart-valve issues fen-phen did.

Farther behind in the pack, Amylin Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: AMLN) is testing a combination of its diabetes drug Symlin and an analog of leptin, a signaling molecule that regulates energy metabolism and body weight. The combination showed promising results in its phase 2 trial, but we’ll need a longer phase 3 trial to know for sure whether the drug combination really works. Like Novo Nordisk’s liraglutide, Amylin’s only downfall might be that its drug is injected, which could potentially scare off some patients if it doesn’t produce stellar results.

Risk vs. reward
The biggest problem for obesity-drug makers might not be the amount of pounds the drugs shed, but their safety in doing so.

All drugs have some side effects, but the acceptable level of side effects is generally tied to how likely one is to die of the disease. Thus, anti-cancer drugs can gain FDA approval with horrible side effects — think hair loss and nausea — but drugs that treat less severe diseases aren’t as liberally approved.

Given the history of side effects for weight-reducing drugs, investors should be cautious about the value they ascribe to drugs in the pipeline until all the long-term safety data is in. Waiting to invest might not fatten up your wallet as much, but it’ll sure keep you from losing your shirt — a side effect of failed phase 3 trials.

Easy Tips To Lose Your Weight

Posted on March 16, 2008

Nutrition FactsThere are thousands of “experts” out there trying to sell you their weight loss solution, which usually involves a huge calorie reduction in order to see results. It is impossible for me, having been in the fitness industry so many years, to justify starving yourself as a healthy practice. I am exercise advocate; I don´t believe in dieting. Nutrition, however, IS a very important component in maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Simple choices often make the difference and I´d like to offer up some easy tips for you to use everyday.

First, it´s important to understand the reason we gain fat weight. When more calories are consumed than the body has current use for, it converts those extra calories to fat for storage. It was an evolutionary survival necessity; when food was plentiful we ate in abundance and when times were lean survival depended on having enough fat stored. If we want to lose excess fat we need to consume fewer calories than our body needs—this is called energy deficit. If one were to consume 100 less calories everyday, or burn 100 more, it would result in over 10lbs of fat loss in a year´s time. If we want faster results, we have to make the energy deficit greater.

Tips to Creating a Daily Calorie Deficit

Avoid Liquid Calories:

A can of Coke has 139 calories; an average latte with regular milk has 180 calories; a 471 mL (16 fl oz) bottle of orange juice can have 225 calories…I´m sure you get the point. Opt for water (0 calories) and tea (5 calories per 250mL). Just for comparison, a plain donut has 185 calories, and a Subway roast beef deli sandwich has 215.

Read Food Labels:

Find out how much a serving size is; it is often less than we think. Products that boast of being low-fat or fat free are not necessarily low calorie. Just as a label that proclaims low-carb or sugar-free doesn´t mean a low fat or calorie count.

Don´t Skip Your Meals:

Try and eat 5-6 times per day. If you eat smaller amounts more often it will keep your metabolism revved up, keep you from over eating at meal times, and help balance your blood sugar level. If you are used to eating only 2 or 3 times a day, try gradually increasing your meal frequency so it doesn´t seem so overwhelming.

Do More Walking:

For a 180lb person one mile of walking burns around 100 calories. It doesn´t matter how fast or slow the pace; walking at a 3.0mph, which is a bit more than a stroll, it would take about 24 minutes. This equates to around 90 seconds for every waking hour. Just find ways to fit it in; park farther away, don´t drive to the corner store, or to get the mail.

Start a Workout Program:

One Pound of lean muscle weight burns up to an extra 50 calories a day. Resistance training is the key to maintaining a higher metabolism as we age.

Making the decision to try and lose of few pounds of fat doesn´t have to be a drastic change to your current way of living. Start with one simple thing today and stick with it; when you start getting used to that try adding something else. You will soon see that it is not that difficult, it is just a habit—a very good one!

The experimental drug, which works differently from other weight-loss medicines, could be approved by the Food and Drug Administration as soon as this month. And industry analysts predict it could become the world’s first blockbuster antiobesity treatment, with annual sales of 2 billion to 4 billion euros, or $2.4 billion to $4.8 billion.
